I bought myself a table for the apartment over the weekend. A huge trestle table it is
My brother in law helped me walk it over from the hardware store, only we quickly went back to trade in the trestles for the smaller versions. The first set made the table just too high to sit at, although they looked fine in the store.
And I finished rereading Bone. That’s a great fantasy comic. I love how — especially early on — every panel clearly shows how the characters are feeling. And the ending is bittersweet, which are the kind of endings I like the most. Bone is good reading.
Saturday was an fun day. It ended with me handing over my flat keys to Sarah, which means that I have now officially moved out of my old place and in to my new.
The day itself started with duvet shopping at Miss Lyn’s. I am now the proud owner of sheets and duvets that actually fit my bed. I’m obviously living in a state of luxury. There are before and after photos up on flickr.
The day was then filled with window shopping and one last trip to completely empty out my old room, which Ilda and Sarah helped me with. The handing over of the keys ended my week long move, which started, interestingly enough, on a day that Jak came over to my old place and made a five spice chicken dish. And it ended a week later with Jak inviting us over to his place to eat, once again, the very same meal (freshly made, not week old left overs).
Anyway, back to work.
In continuation of the moving saga: I spent a large portion of the weekend moving things to the apartment. Jak came around on Sunday with his new car and helped me take over my larger items. I’ve now almost completely moved in and, in fact, slept there last night for the first time. You can find some pics of my place up on flickr. Most of the photos are captioned.
On Saturday I saw Lady in the Water. I enjoyed it; it’s one of the better fantasy movies I’ve seen, probably up there with the labyrinth, princess bride, and the dark crystal. And it was a pleasure to watch Paul Giamatti playing the lead. If you enjoy fantasy, especially more urban fantasy in a Neil Gaiman, Charles de Lint kinda style, I think you’ll probably enjoy the movie.
It arrived yesterday. I went home and waited at the window, watching the road, reading old issues of SF&F. Eventually I saw the buckie drive up carrying a mattress, and I stopped myself from running down before they’d parked and rang the bell.
The bed came wrapped in plastic; I didn’t have my pocket knife with me, so I had at it with my chef’s knife. This was strangely satisfying. The mattress itself is much heavier than I expected from other mattresses, while the base is surprisingly light. But after a few minutes of attaching the bed’s legs and pulling and tugging and worrying about scratching the floor, I had the bed where it’s probably going to remain for the next while. Wooh!
And this morning the fridge arrived. I haven’t had time to unpack it yet, so it’s sitting in my kitchen, all wrapped up in its cardboard box. Just waiting. I’m going to go home and play with it soon.
On another note, it appears that ICASA has released their report on ADSL in South Africa. Farrel has a post about it as his politics blog.
